Children's Happenings Spring, 2020

Sunday School:
Sunday school occurs during the second half of worship throughout the school year.  We currently have two classrooms for our K-5th graders.  The multiage groupings discover the word and world of God through our Spark curriculum.  This curriculum follows the liturgical calendar and gives kids an opportunity to express their beliefs.  Come join us! We welcome new children all the time and we love visitors!

HPPK:
This group of K-5th graders meets after church on Sundays, from 11:15 to 12pm.  We sing songs, do arts and crafts, learn about Jesus and practice and perform two plays yearly.  Currently, we are working on "Once Upon a Parable", which will be performed during the service on March 15th.  We would love to have you come see our production and join HPPK!

Jr Choir:
Practices will resume on March 4th, from 5:15 to 6:00pm.  We welcome singers 2nd grade - Jr High, as long as they consider themselves readers.  If you enjoy singing, come practice with us! We generally sing about 4-5 times a year during the service.  We would love your voice, please join us!

Monthly Moments:
This group is geared toward 6th-9th graders.  It meets on the first or second Sunday of each month during our normal Sunday School time.  This time provides youth with an opportunity to explore their faith, ask and answer questions in a safe environment and learn about God's ways in our world.  Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 8th.  You are welcome to join us anytime.

Upcoming Service Projects:

Bernie's Book Bank is a wonderful organization that has brought the love of reading into countless homes throughout Chicagoland.

PADS Night - Sunday, March 29th, 4:00 - 8:00pm, Deerfield Presbyterian Church.  We will be preparing and serving dinner to the homeless guests that come to the shelter that evening.  We will also be preparing their sleeping arrangements for the night.  Anyone 12 and older is welcome and encouraged to attend this wonderful evening.  This has truly been an eye-opening experience for all, as our youth begin to see a completely different world right at their doorsteps.  Please sign up with Ginny, ASAP

Feed My Starving Children - April 25th, 11:30 - 1:30pm.  We will be packing food for starving children all over the world.  This is a fun filled, high energy way to ensure that you have a part in saving children's lives through food.  What we pack will be distributed to the communities that need it most throughout the world.   Please come well fed and well hydrated!  We will be working throughout our entire shift.  Sign up with Ginny ASAP.

Welcome 2018/2019

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year here at Highland Park Presbyterian Church!  We are excited that you are here.  For those that are returning, we look forward to hearing all about your summer journeys.  For those that are new among us, welcome to our lively group of young learners!

Some upcoming dates to keep in mind:

8/26 - Blessing of the Backpacks.  All school aged kids that are starting a new year are encouraged to bring their backpacks to church.  Reverend Perkins will do a short blessing of the backpacks during service.  This is a great photo opportunity, so bring those cameras/phones.

8/26 - "Back to School" fun time after church outside of the chapel.  Meet new families, say hi to old friends, play games, enjoy popsicles, play with sidewalk chalk and gather together to celebrate the upcoming year.

9/9 - Classroom Set up day during Sunday school.  Come ready to work with a smile on your face!  The kids will be upstairs with Ms. Ginny, helping to set up the classrooms for this school year.

9/16 - First official Sunday school class.  K-2 and 3rd-5th grade meet upstairs in the Sunday school rooms after the Children's message.  Parents, please pick your children up from Sunday school at the end of service.  Please also remember to update your Sunday school registration with Ginny.

9/16 - HPPK begins!  HPPK is a free, fun filled singing, acting and learning program for K-5th grade that takes place after service for 10 Sundays, leading up to our Christmas Pageant.  The Pageant is tentatively scheduled to be performed during the service on December 9th or 16th this year.  No matter your acting background, you are welcome to join the HPPK crew and bring Christmas to life for our congregation.

Attention 6th-10th graders Please let Ginny know if you're interested in becoming stage manager, assistant director or set designer for our production.  Be committed to coming to at least 3/4 of the rehearsals, including the dress rehearsal and performance.

9/23 - FAMILY SERVICE PROJECT @11:15 in the Youth Group room
We will be preparing Halloween care packages for the college students in our congregation.  While geared towards 6th-9th grade, any and all willing participants are encouraged to attend.  Many hands make light work, lots of chit chat and countless smiles.

YOUTH PROGRAMMING

Monthly Moments (6th - 9th Graders)
Monthly Moments will now take place during Sunday school on the second Sunday of each monthBeginning in October, 6th-9th graders will meet with Ms. Ginny in the youth group room and will work through a middle school curriculum together.  We will come together for fellowship, lessons, discussions, fun activities and moments to explore our relationship with God.  Our first Monthly Moments will meet on October 14th, from 10:15 to 11:00.  Please come upstairs with the younger kids after the children's message.

HPPK Junior Choir (3rd-7th graders)
Our NEW Junior Choir will meet on WEDNESDAY evenings from 5:15 to 6pm.  Our first rehearsal will be held September 12th.  Rehearsals will run through December 19th.  If you join the choir, we depend of YOUR VOICE being at every rehearsal and every performance.  The choir will concentrate on one song each month, with the intention of performing three anthems between September and December.  Attendance is required at rehearsals in order to participate in each performance.  The choir will also be a special part of our nativity play in December.  Do you have a friend who loves to sing?  Bring him/her with you to choir practice!
